Step1: Start with sorting
When children are very young they can start out by helping you sort the laundry. Teach them to separate colors from whites, towels from apparel, dark colors from light, etc. Talk about the importance of emptying pockets, reading care labels and turning print tees inside out.
Step 2: Buy quality appliances
An old clunky washer can damage clothing, overflow or just not clean properly. Before turning the laundry over to your kids be sure to have high quality appliances from a trusted brand. The Samsung 7.4 cu. ft. super capacity dryer is perfect for families. It offers steam drying and sensor drying technologies, as well as five drying levels.
Step 3: Let them watch
Young children can sit on a stool in your laundry room and watch as you load the washing machine, set the cycles and transfer the clothes to the dryer. By the time children are 8-10 years old, they should be able to load the clothes and start the machines themselves.
Step 4: Show them step-by-step
Starting with the washing machine, show your kids how and when to add the laundry detergent, as well as how much to use. Explain when to use hot or cold water and how to load the machine evenly. Explain what each of the buttons or knobs mean on the machine. Tell them about the different dryer cycles and show them which way to turn the knobs.
Step 5: Keep things organized
Have a clothes hamper in each bedroom or bathroom. Be sure your laundry room is clean and organized with the proper supplies and equipment. Show you child how to match and fold socks, hang or fold clothing, and put clothes in their proper closet or drawer.
