How To... Upgrade Your Cell Plan

At least a couple of times per year, it is a good idea to look at your cell phone service plan to see if you should upgrade. With technology evolving at a fast pace and cell phone service plans dropping in price, you may be surprised at how much improvement you can see if you shop around. The good news is that upgrading your plan is rather easy.

The first thing you should do is to see exactly what it is that you need. Study your recent bills to see how many minutes you are using. Also be sure to note any internet or text message usage. If you have a family plan, add up the statistics from all of the phones.

Step 2: Contact your provider

Call your current cell phone service plan provider. Simply by calling and telling the company that you are shopping around, your provider may offer you an upgrade that you can't turn down!

Step 3: Shop around for the best fit

If you didn't get a satisfactory offer from your current provider, don't hesitate to shop around. You should also consider the various types of service plans including prepaid and pay-as-you-go. Be aware of any cancellation charges you may incur from your new provider if you make a switch.

Step 4: Initiate a smooth transition

When you finally find the cell phone service plan upgrade that suits you, allow the new provider to help you make the transition. In most cases, you should be able to keep your number if you change providers.

Step 5: Keep an eye out

Watch to see that everything goes as planned. For example, ensure that you are getting charged the correct amount of money from your new provider. Also don't forget to make sure that your former provider stops charging you! You'd be surprised how often they "forget" to end their relationship with you.

If you still aren't happy with the service you are getting from your carrier, you might think about shopping around for a new one - that's what I did. Personally, I couldn't take the overage fees and contract issues with my previous carrier, so I started doing my research. After shopping around, Walmart ended up being the soltuion with their pre-paid Straight Talk company. At first, I thought "prepaid" and I thought of terrible service, but Straight Talk has made me a believer. With no contract or credit check, I only pay $45 a month for an unlimited plan (calls, texting, surfing) that I actually use. The plan has put $50 a month back in my pocket and will potentially save me nearly $1,200 over the next two years rather than my previous carrier. The phone selection is great and what's even better is being on Verizon's dependable network. Sometimes change is the way to go and with Straight Talk I actually get what I pay for.
