Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums, or mums, are perhaps the most well-thought-of flower for fall. Mums come in the perfect nature-made color palette for fall with hues ranging from orange and red, to purple and white. If you find the right type for your planting zone, you might be able to see blooms well into fall.

Sunflowers

These colorful flowers are relatively hardy and easy to grow. They grow well in a variety of soils, just make sure that it's not too moist. Sunflowers do best when placed in sunny locations. They grow pretty quickly so include some slow release fertilizer if you're planting them in poor soil conditions.

Black-eyed Susans

These daisy-like yellow flowers with a dark brown head start blooming in summer, but can last until early fall. And if you cut back flowers after they first bloom, you have a chance of having a second bloom in late fall.

Aster

Another daisy-like perennial, the aster has flower heads that have bursts of small petals. They come in purple, pink, red, and white colors. Bloom time is from late summer to early fall. These plants can be a little tricky to grow from seed so consider picking up a few potted plants or seedlings to grow.
