Isn't it great to get lazy in the garden? There are so many shortcuts to make planning and tending a garden easier. If you like the ease of the lasagna garden, give a newspaper garden a try!

The newspaper garden follows the same no-dig, layered plan as a lasagna garden, but with fewer ingredients. Literally, all you need is newspaper and some mulch! Now is a great time to plan and place your newspaper garden so it's ready for spring planting.

First, mark off the area where you plan to put the garden. Layer newspapers directly on top of the grass. Black-and-white newsprint will degrade better than the glossy pages, so stick to the business section instead of the advertisements. Layer the newspaper about 5 or so sheets thick, then spray the paper with water. Cover the wet newspaper with mulch or leaves and leave it be until spring.

By springtime, the grass below the newspaper will have decayed into rich organic matter. Cut and pull away strips of newspaper to create straight, even rows for planting. You can leave the remaining mulch and newspaper in place as a continued source of nutrients.
