Apples are one of the easiest fruits to pick and use. Mid-September is just about the time apples start to get ripe enough to pick. The exact science to apple ripeness depends on the number of days from when the tree flowered. The best way to know for sure is to ask the farmer (if you're at an orchard). Apples on the outside of the tree generally ripen first. To pick apples, gently twist the fruit so the stem breaks from the branch. Place apples in a basket gently so they don't bruise.
