Gourd Birdhouse

Build A Fall-Themed Birdhouse Out Of A Large Ornamental Gourd.

Gourds are wonderful as autumn decorations, but these inedible fruits can also be very useful. Ages ago, large gourds were often hollowed to make bowls and vessels for carrying food and other items. Today, we use gourds for more decorative purposes, but they can still be useful. Try this gourd birdhouse.

To start, you'll need a large gourd. Clean the outside and soak it in a 10:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes to cure the shell. Let it dry completely.

Drill or cut a large hole on one side of the gourd. It should be large enough for a bird to fit through, 2 inches in diameter or less depending on the bird species. Place the hole just above the center of the gourd to allow space inside for birds to nest.

Scrape the pith and seeds from the inside of the gourd with a knife and scoop it out wit a spoon. Drill two small holes in the stem end of the gourd and loop a wire or rope through so you can hang the birdhouse. Drill a few more small holes in the bottom of the gourd for drainage and ventilation. Paint the outside of the gourd as desired.

Hang your all-natural gourd birdhouse near a window so you can watch birds enjoy your handiwork!
