It's easy to make bird food from crumbs, grains and other food staples around the home.

Birds are a natural and beautiful part of your outdoor spaces, and many gardeners enjoy watching and feeding birds as part of their daily gardening activities.


Birds are a natural and beautiful part of your outdoor spaces, and many gardeners enjoy watching and feeding birds as part of their daily gardening activities. Of course, if you provide food for birds, it keeps them from snacking on your crops, but it also keeps the birds coming back to help keep away insect pests.


Most homemade bird foods use suet as a binding agent, and the birds seem to enjoy it too.  You can also use lard or vegetable shortening, but should mix it with peanut butter to get the right consistency. Many of the other ingredients in homemade bird food also use natural foods from your home.

Save items like stale bread crumbs, rolled oats, cookie crumbs, chopped fruit pieces, unsalted nuts and seeds until you have enough suet to mix together and create a food ball. Make sure the scraps you save are very small; birds can choke on larger pieces.
