Adding a model railroad to your garden can create a fun, unique backyard landscape.

Garden railroads combine two passions, gardening and model railways, to create one unique outdoor hobby.

Garden railroads combine two passions, gardening and model railways, to create one unique outdoor hobby. While indoor model railroad scenes often use synthetic foliage, outdoor railroads are built into a garden, including natural plants, terrain and water features.

Many garden railroaders choose dwarf plants to use as scale representations of trees and shrubs. Herb gardens may be integrated with railroads with great results, as many herbs look like tiny trees. For example, rosemary can fill in for pine trees. Flowering herbs can fill in hillsides or planned flower beds. Prune herbs regularly to keep them in scale, and use the clippings in your favorite recipes.

Themed-gardens also work well with scale railroad sets. You may want to make your garden a scale representation of a famous garden or city park. Alpine gardens are quite popular in the garden railroading community, and there are vast selections of dwarf alpine flowers for your use.
