Large letters

HGTV host and lifestyle expert Monica Pedersen recently released an entertaining book titled Monica Pedersen Make It Beautiful: Designs and Ideas for Entertaining at Home. Pedersen’s book is packed with tips for hosting a variety of parties, including baby showers. One of the centerpieces included in the book features a beautiful floral arrangement surrounded by large letters that spell "baby."

To recreate this look, you can head to your local craft or hobby store to purchase letters and numbers in a variety of styles and sizes. Then decorate the letters in paint or fabric to coordinate with the color scheme of the shower. In addition to creating words like "baby," you can arrange a name, a special date or other phrases that are commonly said around expecting parents. Another idea is to use large letters or numbers to create a youthful alphabet or counting theme for the shower.

Baby bottles

If large floral arrangements are beyond your budget, spring for centerpieces that simply require single-stem flowers. Daisies are ideal for baby shower centerpieces because they’re bright and youthful. You can place the flowers you select in vases, but be aware that there are more creative ways to showcase flowers. For example, Chris Nease, party stylist and founding editor of Celebrations at Home, suggests using baby bottles to line the center of tables and placing a single flower in each one.

Frames, invitations and printables

Another idea Nease offers is to create centerpieces with extra copies of shower invitations. "If you use a cute invitation with a great graphic, place one or two in a frame as part of the centerpiece," she explains. This is a great way to show off the invitations you spent so much time picking out and to reinforce the theme or vibe of the shower.

In addition to featuring invitations, you can design graphics or purchase printable signs to display in frames. Marley Majcher, owner of The Party Goddess, worked on a baby shower for celebrity Tisha Campbell. At the event, cirque-themed graphics were showcased in frames. "Simple cirque graphics in solid white frames are a perfect and cheap way to spruce up any baby shower!" she notes.

Bird houses

Expecting mothers often experience a "nesting" instinct, in which they feel driven to clean, decorate and organize in preparation for their baby’s arrival. "Nesting" is so common during pregnancy that many hostesses select a "baby bird" theme for the shower. In this case, Nease suggests grouping items such as bird houses, nests and cages together to create stunning, whimsical centerpieces.

These ideas are just a starting point. You can also create centerpieces using stuffed animals, baby books, alphabet blocks, toys and more.
