This advice covers popular paint colors, stylish storage solutions, wall decor and awesome accessories -- everything you’ll need to consider when transforming your child’s bedroom from drab to fab.
Kids adore color, so don’t hesitate to decorate your child’s bedroom with bright, bold colors. Pick a color combination and use it to tie the room’s elements together.
According to Vanessa DeLeon, a featured designer on the hit Food Network program Restaurant Impossible and host of a design makeover segment on Pix 11 News at 5, hot colors for a child’s bedroom include yellow, orange, pink, purple and bold blue. "Classic color combinations like orange and blue for boys and purples and pinks for girls are particularly popular right now. Metallic finishes are also a great way to inject a bold color accent into a room," she explains.
Annalisa Thomas, Oilo co-founder, president and CEO, says grays and stripes are also very popular right now. "The thing that is ideal about gray tones is that they offer a great neutral tone so you can mix feminine or masculine colors in with them for either a boy’s or a girl’s room," says Thomas.
Bedding is a major element in any bedroom’s decor. If you want to create a cool-looking kid’s room, steer clear of cartoon-covered bedding. Instead, consider DeLeon’s advice: "Mixing patterns, such as a geometric print, or city theme, such as Paris or Manhattan, with solids can help to keep a balanced and sophisticated look."
Thomas explains that it’s best to keep bedding and furniture sophisticated, while using accessories to achieve a colorful, youthful look. "This way you only have to switch out accessories as your child’s tastes mature," she explains.
There’s nothing cool about a bedroom packed with clutter, so figure out a stylish way to keep toys, clothes, books and other odds and ends out of sight.
"Bins and baskets that are colorful will keep art collections, toys and books organized. Beds that provide storage are also a great way to store items that you don’t always want to be on show," says DeLeon.
To keep her children’s toys out of sight, Thomas purchased an Ikea bookcase. She turned the bookcase on its side and slid it into her children’s closet to create cubbies for toys.
Better Homes and Gardens suggests using garden hanging planters for storage. Not only are these items ideal for storing toys, stuffed animals and books, they look great hanging on the wall.
DeLeon offers some additional advice that can help you design a bedroom your child will love. "Decals are amazing and can come in many colors, styles and themes to really reflect a personality or communicate the room’s theme," she says. "Fun hooks that can display caps or jewelry or a funky lighting fixture can be a great option for a fun decorating element. I love this Green Garden Wall Art from Wayfair.com."
Thomas adds that magnet boards are must-have accessory for every child’s bedroom. "Every child wants to show off their work, and this is a great way to keep the fridge and kitchen clutter at bay."
With these tips in mind, and some extra input from your child, you’ll be able to decorate a bedroom that your whole family will love showing off to others.
