Classic Style

Although there are many different styles and techniques to choose from when decorating your home, there's just something warm and welcoming about the classic decorating styles. Whether you prefer something strictly traditional or a slightly eclectic mix of different classic styles, the overall look is stylish, relaxing and comfortable. If you'd like to add some classic touches to your home, here are a few decorating techniques you can try.

Classic living room

1Classic furniture choices

One of the great things about classic pieces of furniture is that they never really seem to go out of style. When you choose classic furniture pieces, you should focus on quality and durability, because you'll undoubtedly want to keep the piece for a long time. Although a quality piece of furniture will naturally cost more than a cheap piece, you'll actually save money in the long run because of its durability and timeless style.

There are several different furniture styles that fit into the category of "classic." If you prefer a traditionally elegant look, dark wood finishes are always a popular choice. If you prefer something a bit more casual, medium- or light-toned pieces that reflect a traditional or slightly country flavor can also work well. Of course, if you prefer a more eclectic style of decorating, you can mix and match various classic furniture pieces to create a look that is all your own.

2Houndstooth pillowClassic patterns

When choosing fabrics, floor coverings, wall coverings and upholstery for a traditionally styled room, classic patterns are always a great choice. Stripes, floral prints, checks, toile patterns and houndstooth patterns are popular and timeless. Instead of patterns, you could also choose to add visual interest with textured fabrics, wall coverings and floor coverings for a subtler look.

3Classic colors

Warm shades are generally considered to be the best choice for classic-style rooms. Earth tones such as brown, beige, gold, brick red, orange and yellow will add a sense of warmth and earthiness to the room. For a light and airy look and feel, choose colors from the lighter end of the color spectrum. You can also use darker warm shades to provide a striking accent. If desired, you could even use a dark warm shade as the primary color in a room, creating a bold, yet still traditional look. Combine dark wall shades with white woodwork and trim for a truly classic touch.

4French wall artDecorating accents

When choosing decorating pieces, look for traditional accents, styles and patterns. For example, if you love the look of French wall art, a beautiful fleur de lis metal wall sculpture could be the perfect choice. Art prints or canvas paintings framed in traditionally styled frames can also be used to add visual interest to the room. When choosing the lighting for your home, classic choices include chandeliers, floor lamps and table lamps. Candles and lanterns can also be used to add a relaxing or even romantic touch. If you've opted for classic hardwood floors, a beautiful woven, hooked or braided area rug can add warmth and a splash of color.

This is exactly what we have done with our home. Inside we have tons of candles and artwork throughout the living and dining room. To maintain its coziness, we have a candle wall art hung in the living room that holds all the candles in place and also looks great for artwork. We have a brick fireplace and it looks quite lovely contrasting with the brow couch and tan/beige walls we painted all throughout the house. We also have tan colored lamp shades to set the tone with lighting that shine onto the brown sandy window curtains. You honestly can't go wrong with these colors as we have always have such positive feed back from people who enter our home for so many years. No matter what season it is, whether it's on a dark gloomy winter day or hot summer night, the mood is always set with perfect cooling or warmth. I would suggest this to anyone, especially when in such different climates we deal with in Northern California! I think what has also created such a nice touch is the sandy carpet we have put in as substitute for hard wood floor since that can create a cold atmosphere, especially in the cooler mornings. For the kitchen, we put in marble floors to coordinate with the marble counter tops and wooden cabinets. I never realized before how much you can match with different shades of brown!
