How to... deal with no power

Preparing for the unexpected can help you overcome difficult times. Being ready for a power outage is one such scenario. By taking a few steps now, you can feel safe later if your home is to lose power.

FlashlightStep 1: Put together an emergency kit

Every household should have an emergency kit for a power outage that includes at least a flashlight, a radio and a number of extra batteries. This emergency kit should be in an open space that is easy to get to in an emergency. Don't hide it in the basement or on the top shelf!

Step 2: Find food and water

If your home were lose power right now, do you have the necessary non-perishable foods and the bottled water? If not, you aren't sufficiently prepared. Get an ample amount of canned goods and at least a few bottles of water to help you survive if worst comes to worst.

Step 3: Keep cell phones charged

You should make it a part of your daily routine to keep your cell phone charged. If that's not feasible, consider purchasing an extra cell phone battery or a cell phone that is strictly for emergencies.

Step 4: Consider a generator

A very effective way to combat a power outage is to own a backup generator. A generator can provide power to your house until the regular power is restored. If you live in an area prone to hurricanes or tornados, a generator is a must.

Step 5: Prepare your family

Hold a family meeting and go over the plan of action in case of a power outage. Everyone should know where the emergency kit is and where they can find non-perishable food and water. If your home is big, pick an area that makes the most sense as a central meeting point.
