Look at all your mail, kids' school notices, magazines -- anything paper -- in the same spot every day, ideally at a desk. Touch each item only once, when you first look at it. Then either take action on it, put it where it belongs for storage or throw it into your recycling bin or garbage.
Pay bills, sign notes, or put them in a single designated place until you get to them.
Put magazines in a rack or basket. File notices and receipts in the proper folders in your file system. (You do have a file system, don't you?) The idea is never to let paperwork lie around in scattered piles, where you can't find it when you need it.
