Choose only eco-friendly products

Eco-friendly products don’t just include household kitchen cleaners without the hazardous chemicals. You can turn your laundry, bathroom and even your beauty cabinet into a healthy, chemical-free environment. Why not try making your own household cleaners from scratch using basic, non-hazardous items found in your pantry. Whenever possible, buy energy-efficient appliances.

Clever ways to save water

Every Australian knows the importance of water conservation in our harsh dry country. Saving water doesn’t just mean getting a rainwater tank installed. You can turn your home into a water-efficient environment with a few easy changes. Swap your shower head for a water saving one, don’t put up with a dripping tap inside the house or outside, wait till the washing machine and dishwasher are full so that you only run full loads and turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.

Recycle and reuse

Recycling in your home doesn’t just involve your rubbish. Recycle food scraps by starting a compost bin. Compost is great for your garden and helps the plants to retain water. Instead of buying items that are not often used, why not borrow them from a friend. This not only saves you money, but reduces the amount of stuff cluttering up the house. Donate unwanted items, including kids’ toys, clothes, tools, old appliances, DVDs and books to charity stores. Sell or offer for free broken appliances online instead of throwing them away. You may be surprised to find the old adage is true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Simple power-saving techniques

Average monthly electricity bills can be expensive. Go green in your home with some useful power-saving techniques that not only help the environment, but also save you money each month. Use appliances like dishwashers and washing machines at off peak times, turn the temperature down on your hot water cylinder and use only cold water washing machine cycles. Blinds and curtains can help reduce your air conditioning consumption in the summer by keeping the sun out and your heating consumption in the winter by allowing the sunlight in. Other simple yet effective power-saving techniques include switching to energy-efficient light bulbs and unplugging power cords, such as the TV, computer, stereo and mobile phone charger, when not in use.
