Cottage decor for your home

Give your home a by-the-lake feel

From SheKnows Canada
You might not have a cottage you can get away to in the summer, but that doesn't mean you can't bring cottage living to your home. These rustic decor pieces will give your home a warm and cozy feel without your having to drive all the way to the lake.

Cottage decor

1

Woodland bed linens

Curling up in bed at the cottage on a cool summer evening is always a relaxing treat. You might not be up at the cottage this summer, but you can still bring the spirit of it to your bedtime experience by selecting the right linens. Patterns with plaid, stripes, florals or quilting effects will help you achieve a by-the-lake feel. Or if you prefer a subtler, more modern look, consider these woodland bed linens (crateandbarrel.com, $39–$209).

2

Retro canisters

Are you keeping your coffee, tea and sugar in boring old glass jars? Or worse, the original bags or boxes they came in? Then it's time to give your storing methods a fun rustic update. These retro canisters (williams-sonoma.com, $62) will help you stay organized while bringing an old-school, vintage feel to your kitchen. And if that doesn't give your space enough of a cottage vibe, complete the look with a retro bread box (williams-sonoma.com, $62). Small accessories like these scattered throughout your home will bring a relaxed, rustic vibe to every space in your house.

Weathered frames

Picture frames are an easy way to bring the cottage theme to any space in your home. To achieve a cottage effect, keep an eye out for frames made of wood that have a worn or weathered look to them. Check out local antique stores or yard sales for unique vintage pieces. If you don't have any luck, many stores have suitable options, such as these cottage frames (potterybarn.com, $38), which will make excellent additions to any room of the house. Don't forget to fill your frames up with photos of you and friends and family having fun up at the cottage or out enjoying nature.

Rustic floral displays

If you're going for a cottage feel in your home, it's time to pack away glass or silver vases to make room for ones with more relaxed and rustic leanings. Containers made of wood, clay or distressed metal make for the perfect centrepieces or casual floral displays. And they don't have to be specifically designed as vases. Old jugs, pitchers, jars, pots and more all make for cottage-feel display pieces. Fill them with cottage-style flowers, such as sunflowers and daisies, for the ultimate effect. Or better yet, get it all in one place with this faux sunflower arrangement (pier1.com, $40).

Wooden wall shelves

It's easy to focus on furniture and accessories when trying to breathe new life into a space, but don't forget your walls can bring the whole look together. Pictures, wall art and tapestries can help inject more of a cottage feel into your rooms. To get the most bang for your buck, snag some wall shelves such as these rustic wood ledges (potterybarn.com, $51–$90), and fill them up with all kinds of vintage knick-knacks. See if friends or family have any antiques or worn-out vintage items they want to get rid of. Or check out local pawn shops, antique stores and small boutiques for quaint pieces. Then simply arrange all your items in an elegant fashion on your wall shelves, and enjoy your new cottage look!
