To be honest, I had no idea what a Craftsman home was until I moved to California from the East Coast eight years ago. This architectural style has elements of vintage charm in every nook and cranny. Check out this charming Craftsman home that's the perfect setup for entertaining friends and family.

This style of home is iconic in Pasadena, California — think Doc Brown's house in Back to the Future. In fact, that house is actually in Pasadena! The Craftsman design was inspired in the early 1900s by two brothers, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene. Its exterior is most commonly characterized by its low-pitched gabled roofs, broad eaves, large front porches and exposed wood detail.

1. Low-pitched roof and dormers

You can pinpoint a Craftsman-style home by its low-pitched roof and dormers. They often have deep eaves with exposed decorative rafters. And the dormers tend to be wider and stand out on their own.

2. Classic front porch and glass-paned doors

You won't find a Craftsman-style house without its iconic large front porch nestled underneath the roof line and a glass-paned front door. The porch lends itself nicely to the warm Southern California climate because it extends the livable space.

3. Original built-in cabinetry and trim detail

Craftsman-style homes are also designed for both form and function. Check out these fabulous built-ins that provide function while saving space and the exquisite batten-board trim detail.

4. Large fireplace

Almost all Craftsman homes have a centrally located fireplace or hearth as a focal point for entertaining or relaxing.

5. Shaker style

Talk about vintage charm — right down to the antique oven and stools, this kitchen takes on a retro diner look. The straight lines of the white Shaker-style cabinets and metal bin pulls are quintessential to Craftsman culinary spaces.

6. Nooks and crannies

Additional defining characteristics of Craftsman homes are custom features like inglenooks and window seats. This window seat is nestled perfectly within this master bedroom dormer.
