Dads are great. Dads deserve thoughtfully, carefully planned Father’s Day gifts, right? Well somehow the minute it hits Memorial Day weekend my mind turns to sun-craving, beach-daydreaming mush and no matter how hard I try to avoid it, I’m always scrambling for a last-minute gift idea for my dad.
Here are a few last-minute ideas that will look like you’ve been planning all year (or at least more than a day or two in advance).
Make a quick trip to the grocery store or a gourmet market the day of and pick up some essentials for a little gourmet picnic for you and Dad. Pick up some meats, cheeses, bread, sliced fruits and vegetables. Grab a blanket, some plates, cups and cutlery and you’re all set. To make the picnic extra special, consider whipping up a special Father’s Day cocktail. I love a Dark and Stormy on a warm summer afternoon. All you need is dark rum, ginger beer, lime juice and some ice.
I love my dad, but his style could definitely use a bit of an upgrade. I was so excited to discover The Trunk Club, an online personal stylist for men. It’s so easy; Dad completes a style survey and gets matched with a personal stylist. The stylist puts together a trunk based on his preferences and the clothing is sent to him to try on at home. He keeps what he likes and returns what he doesn’t. They offer gift cards so you can kick-start his style transformation.
Nowadays, pretty much everyone lives near a Barnes & Noble or a shop that sells books. I’ve even seen great book selections at Walmart and Target. So even if it’s the morning of, you can make a quick stop in your local bookstore and pick up a good book for Dad. One of my newest favorites for a dad who loves to cook or just eat meat: Michael Symon’s Carnivore. With over 100 meat-filled recipes and meat-related tips (from butchering to selecting the right cuts), this book could be perfect for a foodie Dad.
I love gifting subscriptions. They’re the gifts that keep giving (and that make you feel OK about showing up empty handed). There are so many great subscription boxes happening right now; check out this post I wrote a few months back for some great ideas.
One of my newest favorites, and perfect for Dad, is Bespoke Post. Their monthly boxes are geared towards enhancing the day-to-day lifestyle basics of every man. Each month a freshly curated box is available with themes ranging from home distillery and grill mastering to the best socks on the market. My favorite part: Each month Dad gets to choose what boxes he wants to receive and which ones he’d like to pass on.
Want your dad to experience some of your favorite music, movies or TV shows? Or maybe take a little trip down memory lane with some nostalgic songs or movies? Consider gifting Dad a Spotify or Netflix account and pre-loading his queue with movies or TV shows, or making a custom Father’s Day playlist.
