6 Steps to summer beauty

Hi there, I'm Cait. I'm the blogger behind Pretty & Fun (www.prettyandfun.com) a Chicago-based lifestyle blog. I'm obsessed with perfect manicures, iced coffee and my pup.

Slip into summer mode with a few easy swaps in your beauty routine.

Ahhh, the most long-awaited season of them all is just around the corner, summer. With the temperatures warming up, it’s time to ditch the heavy makeup and fussy hairstyles to get the dewy, glowing look that everyone loves. So let’s brighten up your look a bit, shall we?

Shifting your beauty routine into summer mode can be made possible with just six simple steps:

1. Moisturize

By now we’re all well aware that moisturizer is one of the most important products during the cold weather months when our skin tends to dry out, but it’s important to not skimp just because the sun’s out. Be sure to apply moisturizer after washing your face in the morning and night to keep the sun and heat from drying your skin out and leaving your complexion dull. Burt’s Bees' new Brightening Even-Tone Moisturizing Cream is a great pick because it’s not greasy and sinks deep into skin without feeling greasy or heavy; bonus points for being packed with daisy extract to help you achieve a luminous complexion.

2. BB Cream

Sometimes our skin needs a little extra boost to help us look our best, but no one wants a face full of heavy foundation or powder when it’s warm out (we’ve all seen those girls with melting makeup thanks to a little sweat... no thank you). During the summer BB Cream is a great alternative to foundation; it provides light, sheer coverage that can be layered in trouble spots to hide redness or blemishes.

3. Bronzer

Swiping a bit of bronzer over the apples of cheeks, down the bridge of the nose and around temples can help you achieve that sun-kissed glow without the skin damage or hours spent sweating outside. Start with a light layer and gradually build using a fluffy powder brush to keep your makeup looking natural and blend around jawline to prevent mismatched skin tone from face to neck.

4. Lip stain

Swap out your lipstick for a lip stain for color that’s buildable and long-lasting. Before applying any lip color, make sure lips are smooth and moisturized to prevent the color from drawing attention to dry, chapped lips. Lip stains come in a wide variety of colors and can work well for a natural, everyday look or with bold pigment for a bright look that will last through whatever grilling, cocktails or ice cream cones may come your way.

5. Surf Spray

Everyone loves the messy waves that come with a dip in the ocean; they’re the epitome of casual, summer style. Achieve that look at home with the help of a Sea Salt or Surf Spray hair product. Simply spray the product into towel-damp hair, tousle hair with fingers and let air dry.

6. Bright nails

One of the best things about sandals season is the opportunity to have a little fun and get crazy with a bright pedicure with a neon or highly pigmented shade of nail polish. But your toes don’t have to be the only ones having all the fun; a bright shade of pink or orange can also make for the perfect manicure colors.
