Deck out your patio this summer

As Managing Editor for Wayfair.com, Catie Parrish relishes the opportunity to inspire visitors to create thoughtful, stylish spaces in their homes.

Before you head outside to kick off your sandals and enjoy a cold drink, take some time to spruce up your outdoor space.

Who doesn’t love relaxing outdoors on a gorgeous summer day? Before you head outside to kick off your sandals and enjoy a cold drink, take some time to spruce up your outdoor space. If you are unsure where to begin, just visualize your outdoor area as an extension of the interior of your home. Bringing out the accents and amenities you typically use indoors makes alfresco activities even more enjoyable. Take a look at our ideas for maximizing your outdoor space this summer.

Area rugs

An area rug can be used to define your seating area while also adding an element of design to your outdoor space. Polypropylene rugs are highly durable and great for outdoor use. Area rugs can set the tone of your outdoor space: modern, luxurious, casual and bohemian are a few popular decorating styles for outdoor spaces.

Cushions & pillows

Add cushions to spruce up any patio furniture you already have. Decorative outdoor throw pillows made with durable fabrics are an excellent way to add personality to your space. Fabrics like polyester and cotton canvas can withstand rain and extreme sunlight, making them perfect for patio furniture.

End tables & garden stools

End tables or stools in weatherproof materials like wicker, resin or teak can remain outside despite hot temperatures and rain. Ceramic garden stools come in a variety of colors and are an easy solution for extra seating.

Lanterns & fire pits

Candle-lit lanterns are a great way to illuminate a seating area and create a cozy atmosphere. For the ultimate outdoor oasis, a fire pit provides light, warmth and hours of fun on chilly evenings.

Metallic accents

Add some sparkle to your outdoor space. Drape twinkling string lights over a deck railing, pergola or tree to create a festive setting. Then distribute metallic accents throughout your garden, such as vintage silverware, decorative silver balls and metallic vase-filler. A little shimmer makes a big impact (especially when it’s sunny out).

Deck boxes

Use a weatherproof deck box to store extra serving trays, candle holders and other convenient items you’d typically keep inside. These standard decor and serving items are great to have on hand for entertaining guests outside. You’ll spend less time running in and out of the house and more time soaking up the sun.
