It’s easy to change pillows and other soft goods to improve a room’s mood. You can spend a bundle on designer items, but shop around and you’ll find stylish pillows, bedding or throws, slipcovers, even area rugs priced under $100. New curtains can add real flair to a room; you can buy material from a fabric store (close-out rolls sell at a discount) or purchase inexpensive panels from IKEA or Walmart. For a custom look add a stylish, sewn-on border. New covers for a duvet and pillow shams can freshen up a bedroom. To revive a bathroom, give it a different shower curtain and bath rug. Adding a prefab slipcover or new pillows to your living room sofa can make it more inviting. Look at colors and patterns that will harmonize with other elements and think seasonally. This is a chance for your home to reflect the lighter mood of spring and summer.
Adding crown molding to the tops of your kitchen cabinets (painting or staining it to match) can make them look like custom cabinetry. This is a relatively easy job, very doable for anyone with basic DIY skills and a miter saw, but still worth it if you hire someone. Another light carpentry project is adding built-in seating to an alcove or under a window. This could be a window seat or a kitchen banquette. To save money you can design it to fit standard-size cushions. Built-in seating can double as storage; build it like a box with a hinged top under the cushions or with front-facing cubbyholes holding matching baskets.
Speaking of storage, spring is a great time to sort your clothes and other possessions and improve how you keep them. Look in your closets and other storage areas (from under the beds to up in the attic) for under-utilized space. Many big-box stores now sell well-designed systems to contain and organize clothing and other stuff. Measure your storage spaces and comparison-shop for storage solutions to fit your space, taste and budget. Upgrading your storage reduces clutter, keeps your stuff in better condition and makes it easier to find.
When fall and winter roll back around, you can change your look again by swapping in new (or stored) items, such as pillows, bedding and throws. It’s fun to give your home (like your wardrobe) a seasonal allure.
