Laminate floors are a popular choice for homeowners because they have the look of hardwood without the high cost or high maintenance. Even though they are super easy to take care of, there are a few precautions you need to take when mopping to assure yours stay in tip-top shape.

What damages laminates?

Laminate floors have a reputation of being invincible. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case. They are very durable, but dirt and grime, along with too much moisture, can cause serious damage to your floors.

Quality laminates have the look and feel of hardwood floors. Unlike real hardwood, though, laminates can’t be refinished. Take good care of them now and they’ll last for years.

Sweep before you mop

broom

Break out the broom before you start the task of mopping. It’s important to pick up the larger pieces of dirt and debris that can scratch your floor. Use a broom, vacuum attachments or a hard surface vacuum to get the job done. If you’re using a vacuum, turn off the beater bar before using it on your laminates.

Skip the cleansers

There’s no need for soap, oils or other cleansing products when you’re dealing with laminates. Those products not only seep into the cracks and encourage warping, but they may also void your warranty. Just plain water (and a tiny bit, at that) is all you need to keep those floors looking great. Check with your manufacturer to find out about approved cleansers if you feel you need something more.

Go light on the water

Too much water can warp laminate floors, ruining their good looks for good. When you mop, all you need is a dampened mop. If you’re using a bucket of water, make sure to wring it out at least two times before you let the mop touch the floor.
