Sweetest Day: Hallmark Holiday?

Oct. 15 is Sweetest Day. What is this syrupy-sweet holiday and who celebrates it?

You might have heard that Saturday Oct. 16 is Sweetest Day. Are you wondering what the heck kind of holiday Sweetest Day is supposed to be? We are too – so never fear, we have the lowdown on the holiday.

Sweet History

Sweetest Day is largely thanks to a candy company employee. Imagine that – a holiday designed to sell sweets! But we like candy and all that sweet stuff, so we'll forgive them.

The holiday was first celebrated in Cleveland, Ohio, about 88 years ago when candy maker C.C. Hartzell organized the distribution of 20,000 boxes of candy to young orphans, the elderly and poor people in the city.

In 1937, The National Confectioners Society petitioned to have the holiday added to the list of other recognized holidays like Valentine's Day. They bribed local charities and other organizations with another 10,000 boxes of candy.

It worked, to an extent. Sure, we sort of recognize the holiday, but Sweetest Day is nowhere near as celebrated as Valentine's Day.

All About Men?

Sweetest Day is now a primarily a holiday for the men. The idea is for women to give their boyfriends and husbands small gifts to commemorate their love. Commonly "suggested" gifts for Sweetest Day include candy (yes), electronics (huh?) and sex (imagine that!)

It's widely criticized as just another "Hallmark" holiday, but Sweetest Day is now considered one of the most important holidays for retailers in the upper Midwest, where it originated.
