Craft your own holiday cards

Forget Hallmark

Looking for a new way to be crafty this holiday season? Try making your own holiday cards for friends and family.

(1) Gift-Wrapped Card

Materials needed: Patterned cardstock; solid cardstock; ribbon; rubber stamp and inkpad; glue; scissors; ruler.

Directions: Cut patterned cardstock into strip measuring 5x12 inches. Fold strip to create a 5.5 inch card with a 1.5 inch overhang. Fold edge forward to cover card ends. Cut another strip of patterned paper slightly wider than the 1-inch flap. Glue to top. Tie ribbon around card, making bow at top. Stamp greeting onto a solid cardstock and cut out a tag; glue under ribbon.

Product info: All cardstock from Making Memories; satin ribbon from Midori; rubber stamp from Hero Arts.

(2) Stitched Tree

Materials needed: Tree template; craft sewing kit (ruler with predrilled holes, paper piercer, needle and thread); patterned cardstock; pencil; ruler; X-acto blade or scissors; glue.

Directions: Trace tree template onto patterned paper and cut out three copies. Stack trees on top of each other. Place ruler with predrilled holes over middle of trees; use paper pierce to make holes. Thread needle and stick trees together along premade holes. Glue tree to piece of patterned cardstock; trim as desired. Glue patterned cardstock onto slightly larger cardstock. Add rhinestone star, if desired.

(3) "Merry Christmas" Framed Card

Materials needed: Patterned cardstock; solid cardstock; ribbon; metal label holder; scalloped edge scissors; rubber stamp and inkpad; glue.

Directions: Make a card from a patterned cardstock; trim front of card with scalloped edge scissors. Cut strip from green cardstock and glue under scalloped edge. Stamp holiday greeting on green cardstock and trim to fit under label. Glue onto card. Thread ribbon through both edges of frame and place over greeting; glue ribbon in place and trim excess.

(4) Paper Punch Wreath Card with Bow

Materials needed: Precut card base; leaf punch; mini hole punch; green cardstock; red cardstock; decorative ribbon; glue with fine-tipped applicator.

Directions: Punch out leaves and circles for berries. Arrange on cardstock and then glue using fine-tipped applicator. Cut a strip of ribbon and glue over wreath. Make a bow and glue on top of ribbon strip.
