If you've been using the same old Christmas decorations for years now, it might be time to update them. While traditional Christmas stockings are always fun, these four pieces — all handmade with love from some of our favourite Etsy artists — have a touch of creativity and personality that is going to be hard to beat.

Wickedly cool

converse stockings

If one stocking on Etsy had to win a prize for originality, it would be this super creative one. Combining the love of Converse high tops with the colours of Christmas, this stocking has the cool factor and it will certainly stand out among the others hanging next to it. If you know someone who has a funky urban style, this stocking will definitely put a smile on their face. Handmade by creationzbycatherine, it is made with red twill fabric, a white fake fur cuff and real white shoelaces. It is also fully lined in cotton, so you don’t have to worry about it breaking once you’ve filled it with Christmas goodies. While red is the most popular — and Christmassy — colour on offer, there are also white, yellow, orange, pink, red, blue, purple, green and black stockings available.

Beige, not boring

The mastermind behind this stocking, KatysHomeDesigns, says it’s "shabby chic", but we think it’s just plain chic — and different. Made from organic linen fabric, it’s perfect for someone who likes to celebrate Christmas but who has a bit of an environmental conscience. The stocking is decorated with a few cute accents, including a white satin ribbon and tree-shaped wooden buttons. If Christmas trees aren’t your thing, the artist can personalise your stocking to feature rocking horses, cars or trains. If you do want to inject some red or green hues into the design, just ask for a different colour ribbon. She can also paint personalised words or names onto the stocking — all you have to do is let her know! Fully lined, this pouch is sturdy and will last more than a few festive seasons.

Red hot

red and white stockings

This range of stockings may have different prints, but they have one thing in common: They all have serious style. Though they all use the traditional Christmas colours of bright red and white, the prints are a little out of the ordinary. From left to right, the artist has named the stockings "Wildflower", "Tuscany" and "Chevron" and they’ve been selling like hotcakes. Hand-crafted by HungByTheChimney — whose shop is full of equally fabulous Christmas-themed stuff — the stockings are made with luxuriously soft fabric and a 100 per cent cotton lining. There is also a thick batting sandwiched in between the two layers, meaning that this stocking is of a higher quality and longer lasting than most of its kind.

Reindeer delight

3d stockings

Nothing screams Christmas more than a reindeer, so this stocking couldn’t be more fitting. Perfect for children who still put a carrot out on Christmas Eve, this 3D stocking is a true work of art, made from felt, chenille knit, metallic fabric, fleece, plastic and a touch of glitter. The attention to detail doesn’t stop there: The artist, eugenie2, can personally embroider any name along the cuff using shiny gold or silver thread. The stocking is quite large and lined with extra felt, so it can handle carrying loads of presents. With that in mind, it really is a special stocking for a special child and the metallic monogram adds a personal, chic touch. The artist also has Santa and snowman designs in stock.
