5 Foods for a pre-holiday metabolism boost

I am a Family Medicine physician in DC and I have always loved bringing health information to women in an easy to understand and fun way. I started blogging in 2010.

Research suggests that the average American gains around two pounds every holiday season. What makes this concerning is that the weight usually never comes off. This means over a few years you can increase your baseline weight significantly.

Getting in shape and boosting your metabolism before the holidays is a great way to avoid packing on the pounds.

Add these five natural foods to your diet and boost up your metabolism.

1. Hot peppers

Habanero or jalapeno? Add them both. These peppers contain capsaicin, an ingredient that immediately can boost metabolism up to 20 percent within two hours of eating the peppers. Capsaicin also increases the body temperature and your baseline metabolic rate.

2. Green tea

This tea contains a powerful antioxidant, EGCG, which can boost fat oxidation and help mobilize fat stores quickly. Swap out your afternoon coffee for a small cup of green tea.

3. Peppermint

Adding peppermint to your diet helps regulate bowel health. A healthy gut and regular bowel routine can help the body burn calories more efficiently. Add peppermint extract to your tea, coffee or shakes.

4. Apple cider vinegar

This potent metabolism booster balances spikes and drops in blood sugars that occur when we consume unhealthy foods. These spikes lead to fat storage in the body. Add 2 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water and enjoy in the mornings. This will immediately give you a calorie-burning boost.

5. Citrus fruits

These fruits contain vitamin C, a necessary cofactor for the fat oxidation process. Citrus fruits are also an excellent source of fiber and water and help to keep cravings under control.
