Oprah -- who has had a long-standing challenge with her weight -- is going to take The Vegan Challenge along with 378 members of her Harpo staff. Will it convert her to veganism?Vegan getting big press
A slew of articles in early January indicated that vegan is becoming more mainstream. Guess so -- the biggest star in daytime talk shows is not only going vegan for a week along with nearly 400 of her staff, she is going to air the experience beginning February 1, 2011, to help spread vegan and cruelty-free awareness.Bye-bye animal products
This isn't the first time Oprah has tried veganism. In 2008, the media mogul spent 21 days on a vegan cleanse as a way to try out "conscious eating". Despite her daily cravings for eggs and cheese, she said it certainly made her more mindful of the foods she put in her body. For this next round of veganism, Oprah and her staff will cut out all animal products (that means eggs and cheese, Oprah).Special guests during The Vegan Challenge
The Vegan Challenge isn't going to solely focus on how Oprah and her staff are doing during their vegan week. Oprah is bringing in special guests Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma
, and eco-author Kathy Freston. In addition, journalist Lisa Ling will be taking the audience on a journey through a beef processing plant. Will vegan reign after the challenge?
Oprah didn't embrace veganism in 2008 after her 21-day vegan cleanse, and there are skeptics that think she and her staff won't adopt veganism after The Vegan Challenge is over.ThisDishIsVegetarian.com
says, “We know that after this one-week challenge, no matter how wonderful the vegan diet is portrayed, it is quite likely that Oprah and her staffers will high tail it to the closest pizza joint to order a cheesy meaty pie before hitting up the local Baskin Robbins."What do you think? Will Oprah become a vegan?
