Red, white and blue Rice Krispies treats for the 4th of July? Yes, please!

It's that time of the year! Getting ready for summertime means that you have the perfect excuse to let your patriotic pride show, with holidays like the 4th of July to look forward to. We already know that Rice Krispies treats are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser but "dressing them up" in red, white and blue for an Independence Day barbecue might make the crowd go wild.

Seriously, though. How can you say no to these fun red, white and blue treats?

4th of July layered Krispies treats recipe

Yields one 9 x 9-inch dish

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 6 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • Red food coloring (no taste variety, found in craft/baking stores)
  • Blue food coloring (no taste variety, found in craft/baking stores)

Directions:

  1. Line a 9 x 9-inch dish with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon melted butter and 2 cups marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows are smooth and melted. Add in a few drops of red food coloring. Stir until color is thoroughly combined.
  3. Stir in 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and toss to cover equally. Work quickly so the cereal does not harden.
  4. Add to the parchment-lined dish and flatten.
  5. Rinse out the pan and add 1 tablespoon melted butter and 2 cups marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows are smooth and melted.
  6. Stir in 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and toss to cover equally. Work quickly so the cereal does not harden.
  7. Add as a second layer to the parchment-lined dish and flatten.
  8. Rinse out the pan and add 1 tablespoon melted butter and 2 cups marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows are smooth and melted. Add in a few drops of blue food coloring. Stir until color is thoroughly combined.
  9. Stir in 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and toss to cover equally. Work quickly so the cereal does not harden.
  10. Add as a third layer to the parchment-lined dish and flatten.
  11. Let treats sit for at least 10 minutes before cutting.
