A fun twist to the piñata cookie

Here's a fun way to turn the piñata cookie into a party cocktail. Margarita-flavored and piñata-shaped, these gelatin shots come with a salty surprise in the middle.

This recipe will make approximately 12 piñata-shaped jello shots (and lots of extra jello bites).

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups premixed margarita
  • 1 ounce unflavored gelatin (four 1/4-ounce packages)
  • 4 teaspoons sweetened condensed milk
  • Food coloring
  • Margarita salt
  • Mini piñata cookie cutter (I bought mine at coppergifts.com)
  • Plastic container the same size as your cookie cutter

Directions:

1

Heat 3 cups of premixed margarita in the microwave for 3 minutes. Sprinkle gelatin on top, allowing it to soak for a few minutes.

2

Stir gelatin and margarita for 5 minutes to dissolve gelatin completely.

3

Add 4 teaspoons of sweetened condensed milk and mix thoroughly. Pour 2/3 cup of the liquid into five cups or bowls.

4

Add food colorings. Lightly grease the container with nonstick cooking spray.

5

Pour 1/3 cup of the first color into the container. Refrigerate for 5-10 minutes until firm. Add 1/3 cup of your next color. Refrigerate for 5-10 minutes until firm. Repeat this process with 1/3 cup of each color. Then do the same thing again with the remaining 1/3 cup of colored mixes.

6

Refrigerate layered jello mix overnight. To remove, run a knife blade around the outside of the container.

7

Cut layered gelatin into 1/2-inch slices.

8

Spray piñata-shaped cookie cutter with nonstick cooking spray and cut shapes from the jello slices.

9

Make a slit in the middle back of each gelatin piñata.

10

Insert 1/4 teaspoon margarita salt. And since it would be a shame to waste all the scraps after cutting your shapes, just cut up the leftover gelatin into bite-size, colorful pieces and put them on a plate in a light bed of margarita salt. Party guests can use toothpicks to pick them up and eat them.
