Emerald mint milkshake
DIY St. PaDDy's Day treat

The elusive Shamrock Shake is back at McDonald's, and this year it's available nationwide. What used to be only at select restaurants (and has shockingly been around since the '70s) is now just a drive-thru away. But it's always more fun to make your own!

Try this milkshake recipe from McCormick® which, according to a McDonald's spokeswoman, is strikingly similar to what you'll get at the golden arches.

This was delicous and it doesn't have as much fat as McDonalds. I made this s a How To assignment at school.

Do not drink a shamrock shake after drinking alcohol. Trust me...it's not pleasant

Eww, I honestly think it's to minty, just use mint chip icecream and milk!

jess March 07, 2013 | 12:00 AM

Or just buy mint ice cream and mix it up with a little milk

Emily March 05, 2013 | 9:07 AM

That blender is embarrassingly bad... it obviously could barely handle the ice cream and when she poured it out it was still full of lumps. It also looked like a ridiculous amount of mint extract - I think it would be easier just to buy mint ice cream and blend with some milk, then top with (real) whipped cream.

Made this tonight..not that great. Had a weird after taste..do the McDonald's ones really have lime in them??

I love this shake its the one shake I like at steak and shake

Way too much peppermint. Had to throw out first batch and start all over. Used way less than half the peppermint the second time and it was still too much. Had to add more milk, icecream and I threw in some ice just to make it somewhat edible. Don't love this recipe.

Why that would be dimethicone, Jenn! Popularly used in lotions and floor cleaners, dimethicone is a sort of soluble plastic/silicone mix that is added to a lot of foods today. Mmmn, plastic! They add it to their shakes so they don't freeze solid. >>Jenn March 06, 2012 | 11:18 AM I made these for me and my husband this weekend and they are WAY BETTER than what you get at McDonald's. I figured it would be, but I was pleasantly surprised. What crazy chemicals do they put into those McD's shakes, anyway?

How many calories are in the shamrock shake?

Rich March 17, 2012 | 9:42 AM

McDonalds shakes are disgusting. Steak N' Shake and even Hardees's are way better.

Joseph March 17, 2012 | 9:34 AM

Just go buy Creme de Menthe (already green in color) at the store and add it to Vanilla Ice Cream and whip it up. Instant Shamrock shake, I don't know of the McCormick's Peppermint because I have always used Creme de Menthe.

@Christine...the reason why there's chocolate at the bottom is all the milkshake flavors come out of the same nozzle. The different flavors are selected by a button. There was some left over in the nozzle.

Acidhedz Dubstep March 17, 2012 | 8:16 AM

Or I could just get a container of mint chocolate chip, the milk and make it that way...

Shirley March 17, 2012 | 6:04 AM

If you order half chocolate and half shamrock its like drinking chocolate mint. Its very good.

Joann March 13, 2012 | 6:36 AM

The Mickey D's shakes also have lime in there, believe it or not! you can't get the "authentic" taste without it. So, lime sherbert maybe? squeeze some lime juice in?

Suzie March 10, 2012 | 9:30 PM

I have to be honest... I LOVE McDonald's Shamrock Shakes and I was reeeally disapointed with this recipe. The recipe calls for PEPPERMINT and I believe it should've been MINT because it tasted absolutely disgusting and not like the Shamrock Shake AT ALL.

i haven't tried these shakes yet but i would love to try it

Christine March 07, 2012 | 3:05 PM

I bought one of these for my daughter last week and there was a bit of brown coloring not mixed in on the bottom, and they said they put some chocolate shake in as well.
