National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day: Toss those leftovers

Laura Willard is a law school grad who has successfully avoided using her education for eight years and counting. She's a wife and an adoptive mom to two kids. Motherhood is the best job she never knew she wanted so much until she had it...

Get your fridge in order!

Today is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. What? You didn't know such a day existed? Of course it does. You have to get your fridge in order for Thanksgiving.

Get your fridge in order!

If you're wading through Tupperware full of... who know what, pushing aside nearly-empty milk cartons and holding your nose while trying to find that container of strawberries you're certain is in the back of your fridge, today is for you.

It's National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. That's right, Nov. 15 is the day designated for people across the country to brave the dark recesses of their dirty refrigerators and make them clean again.

Where or how this day originated is uncertain. CNN reports that it could be from a Whirlpool campaign from years ago. Or perhaps it was simply created to help you get your fridge ready for the slew of Thanksgiving leftovers headed its way in just over a week.

Whatever the origins, if your fridge looks like the picture above, break out the gloves, trash can and Lysol and get busy. Forget making room -- that's just gross!

We have some kitchen fridge cleanup tips for you:

  1. Give yourself some time. If your fridge is particularly messy, this is gonna be a long day (or night).
  2. Empty that sucker! Pull all of the contents out so you can properly sort, trash and organize.
  3. Check the dates... and for the love, throw away everything that has passed the expiration date.
  4. Scrub it out! If your refrigerator is in really bad shape, bust out the kitchen gloves.

National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day may be a little silly, but it is a good reminder about the importance of food safety. Remember that bacteria can grow on food even when it's in the refrigerator. The last thing you want is food borne illnesses traveling through your family because your fridge is a breeding ground. Get on board and participate in National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.
