Candy apples are a traditional fall treat, but even the classics can benefit from an update. Make creative candy apples with your kids for a festive and healthy snack.

Cinnamon Candy Apples

Makes 12 servings

Ingredients:

  • 12 apples
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon flavored red hot candies
  • 4 drops red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup ground cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Insert wooden skewers into top of each apple.
  2. Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in a large pot and heat over medium heat. Using a candy thermometer, heat until temperature reads 300 degrees F. Remove pot from heat and add candies and food coloring, stirring until candies have melted and mixture is smooth.
  3. Dip apples into candy mixture then into cinnamon and place on a baking sheet covered in wax paper. Let cool until coating is hard.

 

Chocolate Chip Cookie Candy Apples

Makes 12 servings

Ingredients:

  • 12 apples
  • 2 pounds semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup chocolate chip cookies, crushed well

Directions:

  1. Insert wooden skewers into the top of each apple.
  2. Melt chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat until smooth. Remove pot from heat and dip apples into chocolate then immediately dip into cookie crumbs. Place on a baking sheet covered with wax paper.

 

Peanut Butter Stuffed Apples

Makes 12 servings

Ingredients:

  • 12 apples
  • 8 ounces, plus 2 pounds semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups salted peanuts, chopped

 

Directions:

  1. Cut out a circle at the bottom of the apples and scoop out the inside to make a deep section to fill. Save the top to cover the hole back up.
  2. Mix 8 ounces chocolate with peanut butter in a bowl; heat 2 cups heavy cream with vanilla over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling. Pour cream mixture over chocolate and stir until smooth. Mix 1 cup nuts in.
  3. Spoon chocolate-peanut butter mixture into the middle of the apples and place the top back on. Insert a wooden skewer into each end to secure top.
  4. Melt chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat until smooth. Remove pot from heat and dip apples into chocolate then immediately dip into nuts.
  5. Place apples on a wax paper covered baking sheet.
