Tequila's popular cousin

If you drink tequila in cocktails, shots, or on the rocks, then you will probably enjoy trying a newly popular cousin of tequila, mezcal. In fact, you have been drinking mezcal all along. Try these fun and interesting cocktails with mezcal and enjoy the full flavor.

Strawberry and Smoke

Makes 1 cocktail


  • 4 fresh strawberries, stemmed and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2-ounces mezcal (mescal)
  • 1-ounce elderflower liqueur
  • 3/4-ounce fresh lime juice
  • Chili powder, for rim


  1. Combine strawberries and sugar in a cocktail shaker and muddle well. Add ice, mezcal, elderflower, and lime juice.
  2. Shake well and strain into a rocks glass rimmed with chili powder.

Three Citrus

Makes 1 cocktail


  • 3/4-ounce fresh lime juice
  • 3/4-ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 1-ounce fresh orange juice
  • 1/2-ounce simple syrup
  • 2-ounces mezcal(mescal)
  • 1-orange wedge


  1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a tall glass.
  2. Garnish with an orange wedge.

Mezcal Breeze

Makes 1 cocktail


  • 1-ounce pineapple juice
  • 1/2-ounce fresh orange juice
  • 1-ounce cranberry juice
  • 1/4-ounce fresh lime juice
  • 2-ounces mezcal(mescal)
  • 1 pineapple slice


  1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.
  2. Garnish with a pineapple slice.
