Plan A Perfect
Summer Party

Summer is the easiest season for entertaining. You can plan a backyard bash with more ease -- and less cleaning -- than any holiday party, and the vibe is usually a bit more casual. Still, here are a few important tips to help ensure summer party planning success.

BBQ

Have a plan B

When it comes to throwing a summer party -- especially in your backyard -- having a plan B is always important in case the weather doesn't cooperate. Why not set a rain date on the invite you send to friends? Alternatively, clear some space inside your home just in case of a freak rainstorm. That way, you're prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way.

Stockpile ice

Ice melts quickly when the sun and summer heat start bearing down on your backyard bash, so purchase double the amount of ice you actually think you'll need. A surefire party buzz-kill happens when once-cold drinks turn tepid and sour.

Lighten up your menu

People generally eat lighter meals in summer, so skip heavy, sloppy salads and stick to seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as items fresh off the grill (for example, fresh burgers or sausages). Top everything with condiments or fresh pickles to add that extra summertime feel.

Always keep an eye on food served outside. It spoils a lot faster in the summer sun than when served in cooler conditions. Keep food products on ice, and bring condiments out only when it's eating time.

Go crazy with color

This is the one time of the year that going crazy with color is more than appropriate, and it's a great way to add some festive flair to your bash. Spice things up with colored plates or napkins. This season, neon colors are hot, as is gold. To avoid waste, opt for sturdy cutlery and flatware you can reuse, or buy items that are completely biodegradable. For an extra splash of color, buy hanging lanterns and place them around your yard, or hang lights on your trees. Flowers add decorative oomph to an outdoor party.

Gifts for your guests

Some of your invitees may arrive sans summertime accoutrements (for example, sunscreen, flip flops, umbrellas, hats, sunglasses etc.) so as a fun aside, toss a few of these necessities into a wicker basic or stainless steel drum. When the sun starts beating down -- and things start to heat up -- your guests will thank you for the extra effort.

Play some catchy tunes

Summertime parties are all about the music. To get your guests in on the musical act -- and so you don't have to play DJ all night -- get them to bring their iPods and play each one throughout the event. That way, you'll have a mix of beats and, for the most part, songs won't get repeated.

Make it fun

Whether you whip out the board games or set up some backyard sports (think badminton, bocce ball or croquet), your most important task is to ensure your guests have fun. Provide blankets for people to curl up on when they don't feel like taking part in a game. Introduce newcomers to other partygoers. If you keep smiling and give off an air of relaxation, your guests -- and the party's vibe -- will surely follow.
