Beer is best when you have some food in your belly -- otherwise you may be too buzzed to enjoy the game!
Golden ales lack both maltiness and hoppiness, so they are great for satisfying an over-all basic thirst. Pair this with your hot foods, or spicy dips -- it's all pretty basic. If your tongue is being attacked by heavy spices, you don't want a beer with complexities you'll no longer be able to taste! As for more bitter ales, or German or Bohemian pilsers, they work well with fried foods. In fact, they help to cut the grease. So, if you are serving hot wings… you know how to go!
English or American brown ale is the stuff of bar grub. You want to pair it with the more basic parts of your menu. Foods like burgers and fries go great with any beer, but a good old American brown goes down great with hearty snack foods.
Most foods don't really work with super-strong beers, the maltier stuff really stands best alone, or with nibbles like cheese or chocolate. (Or, if you want to be really bad, a cigar!) Alternatively, the fruity, sweeter beers are great with cake -- or a fruit dip, even. But there are no rules… we've been known to enjoy dark beers with dark chocolate. It's whatever your taste desires!
So, have fun, try something new! And of course, drink responsibly!
