Bacon for dessert!

Warm, salty, fatty bacon can be eaten for more than just breakfast. Bacon makes a great dessert and works surprisingly well with sweet accompaniments. Candied bacon and bacon ice cream are a few of my favorites, but there are lots of other sweet ways to enjoy this rich and delicious pork treat. As fall approaches, sweet bacon recipes are perfect for a seasonal dessert transition. Give these savory sweet bacon recipes a bite.

Candied bacon

Sweet bacon recipes

Candied Bacon

Makes 8 servings

Ingredients:
16 pieces thick-sliced bacon
1/2 cup maple syrup

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Arrange bacon on a foil-lined tray. Bake bacon until crispy, about 10 to 15 minutes. Drain grease from bacon.

3. Pour syrup over bacon. Put bacon back in oven and bake 10 to 15 more minutes or until bacon is golden.

4. Take pan out of oven and move bacon to a rack set over paper towels. Let cool for 5 minutes or until crispy.

Chocolate Chip Bacon Cookies

Makes 3 dozen

Ingredients:
6 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons heavy cream
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Cook bacon in microwave or skillet until crispy. Drain well on paper towels then mince and let cool.

3. Meanwhile, beat flour with butter, sugar, egg, salt and heavy cream. Stir in chocolate chips and bacon.

4. Drop batter by the tablespoonful onto baking sheets and bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden. Let cool on wire racks.

Chocolate Covered Bacon

Makes 8 servings

Ingredients:
1 pound bacon strips
12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup heavy cream

Directions:
1. Cook bacon in microwave or skillet until crispy. Drain well on paper towels. Cut strips of bacon in half.

2. Combine chocolate chips and heavy cream in a large pot and heat until melted, stirring so the bottom doesn't burn.

3. When chocolate has melted, add half the bacon to the pot and cover with chocolate taking care to not break the strips of bacon. When covered, remove bacon and place on wire racks to cool. Repeat with remaining bacon.
