Hot dogs go gourmet

One of the most classic of summer BBQ foods is the all-American hot dog. Grilled with mustard or ketchup is, of course, a delicious way to enjoy a dog, but sometimes you just want something a little more gourmet. Here are some simple tips and recipes to give your ordinary hot dogs upscale flair.

Gourmet hot dog recipes

Hawaii 5-0 Dog

Makes 8 servings

1 pound pork hot dogs
8 whole wheat hot dog buns
1/4 cup sweet BBQ sauce
1 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored, diced small
4 tablespoons shredded coconut

1. Preheat grill to medium-high. Grill hot dogs until fully cooked through.

2. Place buns on grill, split-side down and grill for 1 to 2 minutes to toast and warm through.

3. Spread an even amount of BBQ sauce on buns and top with hot dogs. Spoon pineapple overtop of dogs and sprinkle with coconut.

Spicy Mexican Dog

Makes 8 servings

1 pound beef hot dogs
8 small corn tortillas
1/4 cup sour cream
2 to 4 jalapeno peppers, minced
1 small onion, diced
1/2 cup pinto beans
1/4 cup guacamole

1. Preheat grill to medium high. Slice hot dogs down the center, but not all the way through to the bottom. Grill hot dogs slit-side down until fully cooked through.

2. Place tortillas on grill for a few seconds per side to warm through but not make crispy.

3. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine sour cream with peppers and onions.

4. Lay tortillas flat and spread sour cream mixture on bottom. Top with hot dog then spoon pinto beans down the center of the dog and top with guacamole.

Apple & Brie Dog

Makes 8 servings

1 pound chicken hot dogs
8 (6-inch) French bread rolls, split
1/4 cup honey mustard
2 green apples, diced
6 ounces brie, diced

1. Preheat grill to medium-high. Grill dogs until fully cooked through.

2. Place rolls, split-side down on grill and grill until heated through.

3. Spread honey mustard on rolls then top with hot dogs. Sprinkle with diced apple and top with brie.

4. Place rolls back on grill and shut lid. Cook for 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.
