Atkins launches new bakery fresh bread products

Grilling season is just around the corner, and with barbeques firing up across the country, many traditional foods present a challenge for people who want to remain faithful to their low-carb lifestyles.

In response to high consumer demand, Atkins Nutritionals Inc. has launched a new line of bakery rolls for consumers who enjoy bread but don't want to load up on carbohydrates.

"Summertime standards like grilled chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers are treats no one wants to do without, even if they are following a controlled-carb nutritional approach," says Matt Wiant, senior vice president of marketing for Atkins. "That's why we spent months developing quality bakery items that satisfied both consumer demand and the Atkins Nutritional Approach."

The Atkins Bakery rolls come in three varieties: sandwich, dinner and hot dog. Unlike the traditional brands, Atkins Bakery rolls are low in carbohydrates, contain fewer calories, and have seven to nine times more fiber than rolls made with bleached white flour. Additionally, Atkins Bakery rolls have either 4 or 5 grams of net carbs per serving.

"Variety is key to keeping people enthusiastic about their low-carb lifestyle," says Colette Heimowitz, MS, vice president of education and research for Atkins Health & Medical Information Services. "But consumers need to be aware of the nutritional value of what they are eating, rather than just picking up products with a low-carb label. The Atkins Bakery rolls are nutritious alternatives to traditional bakery products, and they contain no hydrogenated oils or added sugar and are appropriate for all phases of Atkins except Induction."

Those counting carbohydrates typically count only grams of net carbs, which have a minimal impact on blood sugar.
