Having said that, the Londoner is being hailed as a hero after inadvertently spending over £300 on pizza for total strangers on the other side of the Atlantic.
The Mirror reported that Daniel's pizza spending spree began when he asked Reddit users for help ordering and paying for a pizza to be delivered in the U.S. The idea of using Bitcoins was suggested, which is a peer-to-peer payment system allowing users to make transactions between themselves without the need for a bank or other intermediary service.
Unfortunately Daniel didn't check the current conversion rate of Bitcoins and, having sunk one too many beers, he went ahead and ordered two of them. Which was more than enough to pay for a pizza — one Bitcoin is worth around $220 (around £185).
Realising there was nothing he could do about his accidental purchase, Daniel decided the best way forward was to spread the pizza joy, posting on Reddit: "Are you in the States? Do you want pizza? Talk to me. May have gone overboard with Bitcoins.
"Like I bought two to make sure it worked and it turned out that's like $550," he continued. "If you want a pizza write in a comment in this thread why you want one. I'm not very eloquent right now but there's about $160–$170 worth going."
Daniel, who works in marketing, estimates that he "got about 30 pizzas out," delivering to Chicago, Hawaii and one lucky user in the U.K.
He’s now being labelled the "Jesus of the Internet" with one Reddit user posting, “Trashed and giving out pizzas is the best kind of person.”
Daniel remains philosophical about his fast-food splurge saying, "It was with the work account that I purchased them, as opposed to mine, but on the downside that's not exactly a good thing in the eyes of my bosses that I just blew $550 on virtual currency. Anyway you can take this from (sic) what you will but all I wanted to do is to put out there that sometimes things happen not for gain but because good things can happen for the sake of it. Especially when smashed."
