5 Candy milkshake recipes your inner child will love

I started Eat Make Celebrate in the winter 2014. Prior to that I was Creative Director of Sugar and Plumm and NYC based bistro, bakery and chocolate shop.

When I was 10, my best friend and I spent months creating our perfect strawberry-banana milkshake. We were so proud of our kitchen prowess! Over the years, I've added to my culinary repertoire but putting ice cream in a blender still fills me with joyful anticipation.

I decided to re-invent some of my favorite candies as milkshakes. What's better than candy you can drink through a straw? Summer tastes so good!

These recipes make four servings, but you can scale them up or down accordingly.

1. Mounds milkshake recipe

Mounds are a combination of coconut and dark chocolate. Two great flavors that pair perfectly together.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut ice cream
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1/4 cup chocolate sauce (per serving)

Chocolate, caramel and cookies make a pretty perfect candy bar and a pretty perfect milkshake. Use any cookie you like; anything from graham crackers, ice cream cones or an actual Twix bar makes a delicious add-in.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pint caramel ice cream
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup chocolate sauce
  • 2-4 cookies or Twix bars

3. Sour gummy peaches milkshake

If you like sour gummies as much as I do, you will be making this milkshake all the time. The key is to make a super-flavorful peach puree to help you turn regular ice cream into something so much greater.

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 medium peaches or 16 ounces frozen peaches
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon lemon extract or lemon oil
  • 1-3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup water
  • 1 pint vanilla ice cream
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • Whipped cream for garnish

Directions:

  1. Peel and slice the peaches. (If you are using frozen peaches, thaw the slices.) Combine the peaches with the juice of 1 lime, vanilla extract, lemon oil, sugar and 1/4 cup of water. The lemon extract or oil is really important because that's what will give you that sour gummy flavor. You can adjust the sugar and the lemon depending on how tart you like it. If the peaches are very ripe 1 tablespoon of sugar will be plenty; if not, you can add more as needed.
  2. Place the peach mixture in a saucepan and cook over low heat for about 15 minutes. The peaches should be fork tender and the liquid should be syrupy. If the peaches look dry add a little more water as needed.
  3. Let the mixture come to room temperature and then blend it together to create a puree. Set aside the peach mixture and make the milkshake.
  4. Blend the ice cream and milk. Pour a little milkshake into the glass and top with a spoon or two of the peach mixture; create a few layers of peach and milkshake in each glass. Top with whipped cream.
