No one has yet reported getting ill from the possible contamination, which was detected after routine testing by the FDA. However, better safe than sorry! If you have purhased any of the items below, you can return them to the store of purchase for a refund or replacement.
Also, be on the lookout for salmonella if you've eaten any of the products that may have been contaminated: fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody) and abdominal pain are all symptoms. If you're feeling any of these, then go see a doctor stat, as salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections.
The recalled brands include Shurfine, Western Family, Hy-Vee, Market Pantry, Pear's Gourmet, Cash-Wa Distributing, Pegler Sysco and Mayan Gold. You can see the exact UPC codes and expiration dates of the affected products here.
