For this year's big-game party, nothing is more important than a great appetizer. We combined Jimmy Dean Sausage Crumbles with sharp cheddar cheese and Granny Smith apples roasted in brown sugar, and then we tucked them all into a light puff pastry.
We cut prep time in half by using ready-to-serve Jimmy Dean Sausage Crumbles. This makes for a fast and delicious two-bite appetizer that guys and gals will all enjoy. And using this recipe will give you more time in front of the TV to watch the big game or our favorite part: the commercials.
The Two Chicks from the Sticks: Jamie & Jill
Game-day sausage puffs
1 package Jimmy Dean Sausage Crumbles
1 medium Granny Smith apple, cored and diced into 1/2-inch pieces (skin on)
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
3 ounces sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 package puff pastry (refrigerated)
Place the oven rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lay out an ungreased 12-hole minimuffin pan.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, saute the apples in the butter for 1 minute. Add the brown sugar to the apples and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the apples are cooked through. Then remove them from the heat.
Lay the puff pastry flat on a cutting board or pastry mat. Cut it into 12 even squares. Gently place each pastry square into the holes of the minimuffin pan.
Place a pinch of the cheese in the bottom of the puff pastry, followed by 1 tablespoon of sausage, 1 teaspoon of apples and a generous pinch of cheese. Repeat with the other 11 puff pastries.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
