Coca-Cola-infused recipes, from appetizer to dessert

And the secret ingredient is... Coke!

Coca-Cola: It ain't just for drinking, friends. Sure, there's nothing more refreshing than an ice-cold Coke on a hot summer day, but Coke is also an amazing secret ingredient in many of your favorite recipes. After a splash of Coca-Cola, your chicken wings, cake and cheesy dip will never be the same.

The first time I tasted a chicken roasted with Coke, I nearly fell off my seat. The Coke adds just the right hint of sweetness without being overpowering, and gives the chicken an added moistness you just can't get with anything else. I was so wowed by that recipe that I decided to try my hand at creating an entire Coca-Cola menu, complete with cake and cheese dip. And it all turned out so well that I decided not to share with my friends.

1. Coca-Cola French onion chicken wings recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients: 

  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 (12 ounce) can Coca-Cola
  • 1 packet French onion dip mix
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2-1/2 pounds chicken wings
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Green onions, for garnish
  • Cornstarch, for thickening

Directions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, Coke, French onion dip mix, onion, soy sauce, salt and pepper to combine. Pour 3/4 of the sauce and the chicken wings into a slow cooker. Cook on low for 8 hours, stirring occasionally, until the chicken wings are fork tender.
  2. Add a dash of cornstarch to the remaining 1/4 of the sauce, and whisk to thicken. Pour the sauce over the wings, and garnish with the green onions.

2. Coca-Cola-braised sausage and onions over mashed potatoes recipe

Braised sausage and onions over mashed potateos

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 chorizo sausages
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 1 packet French onion dip mix
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup Coca-Cola
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Fresh parsley
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (use this recipe)

Directions:

  1. In a large Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions and mushrooms, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the French onion dip mix, brown sugar and cola. Add the sausages.
  2. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the liquid has mostly evaporated.
  3. Slice the sausages into bite-sized pieces, and serve over mashed potatoes with the caramelized onions and mushrooms, garnished with fresh parsley.

3. Super-cheesy green onion Coca-Cola dip recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3 ounces mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup Coca-Cola
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Into a large bowl, place the cheese, cola, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Microwave on high for about 1-1/2 minutes, stopping to stir after 20 to 30 seconds, until the cheese has melted and the liquid has evaporated.
  2. Stir in the chopped green onions, and serve with veggies or chips.

4. Gluten-free Cherry Coke cake recipe

Serves 14

Ingredients: 

  • 1-1/2 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup almond meal
  • 1 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 cup butter, unsalted
  • 1 cup Cherry Coke
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup marshmallows
  • 1 cup chopped almonds
  • Whipped cream
  • Cherries, for garnish
  • Honey

Directions: 

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a baking pan or 8 x 8-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, almond meal, baking soda and xanthan gum. Set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and marshmallows together, and cook over medium heat until the marshmallows have melted. Stir in the cocoa and vanilla, and remove from heat.
  4. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture, and stir in the cola, buttermilk and eggs to combine. Gradually add the cocoa-butter mixture, and stir to combine.
  5. Mix in the almonds, and pour the batter into the prepared baking pan. Bake for about 32 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Serve with fresh whipped cream, cherries and additional almonds. Drizzle with honey.
