The best muddy buddy recipes

Muddy buddies, or puppy chow, is one sweet snack you'll reach for over and over. The classic muddy buddy recipe calls for cereal coated in chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar, but I think these variations make a fun treat even better.

Hazelnut Nutella muddy buddies

Hazelnut Nutella Muddy Buddies

Ready to take your favorite spread to the next level? These muddy buddies have a chocolate and Nutella base, but the ingredient that really heightens the flavor is hazelnut-flavored powdered coffee creamer.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 5 tablespoons Nutella or similar hazelnut spread
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hazelnut-flavored powdered coffee creamer

Directions:

  1. Measure the cereal into a large bowl and set aside
  2. Combine the Nutella and milk chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl.
  3. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir and then return to microwave for 15-20 seconds. Stir until completely melted.
  4. In a large bowl, place the 5 cups Rice Chex cereal. Pour the melted chocolate and Nutella over the cereal and stir to coat.
  5. Transfer the mixture into a large resealable bag. Add in the powdered sugar and coffee creamer
  6. Shake until well coated.
  7. Spread the mixture on a 9 x 13-inch pan and allow to cool.

Lemon cheesecake muddy buddies

Lemon Cheesecake Muddy Buddies

Spring is approaching and what better way to celebrate than to have a light and refreshing snack? These lemon cheesecake muddy buddies are zesty and tangy.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 5-1/4 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 2/3 cup white chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2-1/4 teaspoons lemon zest
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cheesecake pudding mix, dry
  • 1/2 cup yellow candies (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Measure the cereal in a large bowl and set aside.
  3. Combine the white chocolate chips, butter, lemon zest and lemon juice in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir and return to the microwave for 25-30 seconds more. Stir until smooth.
  4. Pour the white chocolate mixture over the cereal.
  5. Transfer the cereal into a large resealable plastic bag.
  6. Add in the powdered sugar and cheesecake pudding mix. Shake until well coated.
  7. Spread the mixture on a 9 x 13-inch pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes rotating the mixture every 5-7 minutes.
  8. Remove and let cool completely.
  9. Sprinkle over yellow candies if desired.

Confetti Cake Batter Muddy Buddies

These muddy buddies are reminiscent of birthdays and lots of birthday cake. Covered in lots of sprinkles, of course.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1-1/4 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup yellow cake mix
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Colored sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Measure the cereal in a large bowl and set aside.
  2. Combine the white chocolate chips and vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir and return to the microwave for 25-30 seconds more. Stir until smooth.
  3. Pour the white chocolate mixture over the cereal.
  4. Transfer the cereal into a large resealable plastic bag.
  5. Add in the yellow cake mix and powdered sugar. Shake until well coated.
  6. Spread the mixture on a 9 x 13-inch pan and let cool completely.

Triple Chocolate Muddy Buddies

Calling all chocoholics. These muddy buddies are loaded with three different kinds of chocolate. Can you handle that much chocolate?

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1-1/4 cups milk chocolate chips
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate pudding mix, dry
  • Rounded 1/4 cup miniature chocolate chips
  • 1/2 batch prepared brownies (baked and cooled)

Directions:

  1. Measure the cereal in a large bowl and set aside.
  2. Combine the milk chocolate chips and vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir and return to the microwave for 25-30 seconds more. Stir until smooth.
  3. Pour the milk chocolate mixture over the cereal.
  4. Transfer the cereal into a large resealable plastic bag.
  5. Add in the powdered sugar, chocolate pudding mix and miniature chocolate chips. Shake until well coated.
  6. Spread the mixture on a 9 x 13-inch pan and let cool completely.
  7. Meanwhile, take about 1/2 batch of prepared brownies. Crumble up the brownies and knead until you reach a dough-like consistency.
  8. With your hands, roll out small balls of brownies.
  9. Add the small brownie balls to the muddy buddy mixture.

Single Serving Size Chocolate Muddy Buddies

You know those times when you are craving a snack, but don't want to eat an entire batch of something? This recipe is for those times. These muddy buddies will whip up a single serving-size snack in a matter of minutes.

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Rice Chex cereal
  • 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Optional: 1-2 tablespoons chocolate candy (Sixlets featured in image)

Directions:

  1. Measure the cereal in a small bowl and set aside.
  2. Combine the milk chocolate chips and peanut butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir.
  3. Add in the vegetable oil and continue to stir until melted. Return to the microwave for 15-20 seconds if needed.
  4. Pour the milk chocolate and peanut butter mixture over the cereal.
  5. Transfer the cereal into a small resealable plastic bag.
  6. Add in the powdered sugar. Shake until well coated.
  7. Spread the mixture onto a plate and allow to cool.
  8. Mix in chocolate candies if desired.
