Fig-alicious Compote

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried figs, chopped

  • 1 cup orange juice

  • 2 coarsely crushed black peppercorns

  • 2 coarsely crushed cardamom pods

  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves

  • 1 cinnamon stick crushed

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • 2 tablespoons white wine or more to taste

  • 1/4 cup sugar (try vanilla sugar)

  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Directions:

  1. Place spices in a muslin bag, tie to seal, and set aside.

  2. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine figs, orange juice, zest, wine, and sugar. Cook, stirring, until mixture comes to a boil.

  3. Add the bag, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until mixture is thick. Stir in walnuts and continue to cook for a few minutes.

  4. Remove muslin bag and transfer compote to a sterilized mason jar. Use immediately or allow to cool and store, sealed, in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
