This reality TV series debuted in June on ABC Family, and centers on Ben, a 17-year-old from Illinois, whose father, Carly, decides to undergo gender reassignment surgery to become a woman. What's unique about this show is that the process of Carly's transition is presented from Ben's perspective. Heartbreaking, inspiring, moving and unflinchingly real are just some of the terms that have been used to describe this series so far.

I Am Cait

E!'s eight-part docuseries premiered this week to rave reviews. The show, which follows Caitlyn Jenner and takes an inside look at how her transition affects her relationships with those closest to her, has been praised for its determination to highlight the struggles of the transgender community while also sending an uplifting and, ultimately, educational message.

I Am Jazz, TLC's 11-part reality series, follows Jazz Jennings, who is about to begin high school and who is dealing with all the angst that accompanies being teenager, as well as facing the additional challenges posed by the fact she is a transgender girl. I Am Jazz has been praised for its sensitivity, simplicity and heartfelt nature as it goes about presenting the struggles of teenage life "through the lens of a transgender youth."

Widely hailed as one of the most groundbreaking new shows of 2014, Amazon's Transparent has lived up to the hype, receiving much praise and award recognition for its humorous, honest and touching depiction of a father making the transition from male to female.

Available on Amazon Prime Instant Video, This Is Me is a new documentary series "produced by the trans community about the trans community." Each episode follows a different struggle faced by those who identify as transgender — the use of public restrooms and gender-neutral language, for example — and focuses on not just these struggles, but their triumphs as well.

Discovery Life

This six-part docuseries debuted on Discovery Life in April, seeking to show how ordinary scenarios "become extraordinary because transgender people are involved." The series followed the journeys of six transgender women as they talked openly and honestly about their experiences and society's reaction to them.

Secret Lives of Americans

Last week's episode of Pivot's Secret Lives of Americans followed Cayes, a young man born female. While Cayes initially chose to keep his transition secret from his colleagues because of his fears about how it would impact his job security, an article about a transgender youth who committed suicide compelled Cayes to reveal his secret and spread the message that being transgender is not anything to be ashamed about.

Premiering in September on Fuse, Transcendent "documents the struggles and triumphs of what it's like to be transgender in America today" as it follows a series of talented trans women who perform at the AsiaSF. While the struggles are at the forefront of this docuseries, so is the sisterhood that is forged among these women through their shared experiences.
