Netflix forever

As far as we're concerned, there are two major historical periods in modern life: B.N. and A.N. (that's Before Netflix and After Netflix).

Although the service has only offered streaming since 2007, we honestly can't even remember life without Netflix. Remember getting home too late for your favorite TV show? Remember having to wait every week to watch the next episode? We do, and not with much fondness. We don't even like to admit it now, but, yes, we did pay over $100 for the entire collection of One Tree Hill DVDs. Not to mention the fact that drawing the blinds and settling in to watch, like, 15 hours of TV in a row was not nearly as socially acceptable 10 years ago as it is now.

Speaking of bingeing, have you watched these series from beginning to end yet? Because if you haven't, you really should.

A version of this article was originally published in July 2015.

'Mindhunter'

#3/47:

'Mindhunter'

This creepy Netflix original delves into the psychology of serial killers as the FBI, in the early 1980s, began to put together a comprehensive profiling system that would help them track at-large killers. It sounds boring, but in the hands of the director of Gone Girl and The Social Network, this is riveting stuff.

#4/47:

'Stranger Things'

#4/47:

'Stranger Things'

Everyone is going bonkers for the new cult hit and '80s throwback Stranger Things, and after the first awesomely eerie episode, you'll understand why. Don't sleep on this one.

#5/47:

'The Get Down'

#5/47:

'The Get Down'

The Get Down, set in 1977 New York City, was created by Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators that includes Grandmaster Flash. Sadly, it has been canceled, but you can still watch the first season.

#6/47:

'Jessica Jones'

#6/47:

'Jessica Jones'

Yet another new Netflix original people are obsessed with, this series follows the life of Jessica Jones, one of the darker Marvel characters.

#7/47:

'Quantico'

#7/47:

'Quantico'

The Netflix gods heard your prayers: The first season of this ABC FBI drama, about a Quantico recruit who seems to have been framed for a serious crime, is now streaming.

#8/47:

'Bitten'

#8/47:

'Bitten'

Yes, Bitten is a vampire-werewolf-supernatural-what-have-you show, but it is sexy and smart and, well, highly addictive.

#9/47:

'Departures'

#9/47:

'Departures'

This docu-series follows buds Scott and Justin as they do what we all dream of doing: ditching the daily grind and exploring the globe.

#10/47:

'Bloodline'

#10/47:

'Bloodline'

If I had a dollar for every person who's recommended Bloodline to me, I'd be well on my way to being a rich woman. And no wonder — this  Netflix original series about family secrets is riveting. It was canceled after three seasons, but we promise you will be hooked through every single episode.

#11/47:

'Hell on Wheels'

#11/47:

'Hell on Wheels'

This gritty western can be a bit tedious, but the picture it paints of post-Civil War life is fascinating. Plus, lead Anson Mount is more than memorable.

#12/47:

'Peaky Blinders'

#12/47:

'Peaky Blinders'

There are few words that will do justice to this imported BBC2 drama starring Cillian Murphy about a crime family living and operating in Birmingham, England, in the 1920s. Just trust that you need to be tuning in.

#13/47:

'Luther'

#13/47:

'Luther'

If you're going to watch a cop drama, let it be Luther. Another British import, it boasts brilliant writing and — of all the good things in this world — Idris Elba at the helm. Need we say more?

#14/47:

'Rectify'

#14/47:

'Rectify'

If we're going to be friends, I'm going to need you to tune into this stunning, engrossing character study of a series (about a man released from prison after 19 years) ASAP.

#15/47:

#15/47:

'The IT Crowd'

#16/47:

'Z Nation'

#16/47:

'Z Nation'

If you're a fan of The Walking Dead, you should definitely check out all three seasons of this campy apocalyptic series.

#17/47:

'Marco Polo'

#17/47:

'Marco Polo'

Another Netflix Original, Marco Polo, may be slow at first, but give it a chance. The cinematography and acting are solid, and we're still sad it didn't make it past Season 2.

#18/47:

'Hemlock Grove'

#18/47:

'Hemlock Grove'

This dark and fantastical series from horror director Eli Roth, based on the novels by Brian McGreevy, is well worth the spooks and supernatural jumps it gives over the course of its three seasons.

#19/47:

'Grace and Frankie'

#19/47:

'Grace and Frankie'

For the love of all things holy, if you haven't watched this Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin-fronted series yet, do so immediately.

#20/47:

'Bates Motel'

#20/47:

'Bates Motel'

Why aren't more people talking about this excellent series, which acts as a prequel to the 1960 film Psycho, exploring the relationship between Norman Bates and his mom? Vera Farmiga alone is worth the watch.

#21/47:

'Lost Girl'

#21/47:

'Lost Girl'

When the title character is a succubus (yes, you read that right), you know you're in for a crazy, sexy time. Lost Girl is a light and witty treat.

#22/47:

'Sense8'

#22/47:

'Sense8'

The cancellation of this series caused die-hard fans to pretty much riot, and we can totally understand why. The cinematography is beautiful and, really, the message is too.

#23/47:

'The Originals'

#23/47:

'The Originals'

Vampires, werewolves, beautiful people and the sleepy Southern intrigue of New Orleans? Why, yes. Yes, you should watch The Originals.

#24/47:

'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'

#24/47:

'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'

Seriously, you guys, Netflix is on top of their game right now. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is nonstop fun. And who doesn't love Ellie Kemper?

#25/47:

'Parenthood'

#25/47:

'Parenthood'

This poignant and often funny family drama never got the accolades it truly deserved. In full disclosure, I bawled watching every week and you will, too.

#26/47:

'The Killing'

#26/47:

'The Killing'

A stellar AMC Original, The Killing will haunt you and make you fall entirely in love with Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman.

#27/47:

'Wilfred'

#27/47:

'Wilfred'

Admittedly, I was incredulous about a show with a dude in a dog suit. But, y'all, it's so obscenely hilarious. You won't be disappointed.

#28/47:

'Portlandia'

#28/47:

'Portlandia'

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are so perfect in this crunchy comedy, we need a new word for perfect. If you love snark, this is your jam.

#29/47:

'Halt and Catch Fire'

#29/47:

'Halt and Catch Fire'

This show about computer engineers and programming prodigies is not only for the nerd-at-heart. The writing is sharp, and Lee Pace is a treasure.

#30/47:

'Hart of Dixie'

#30/47:

'Hart of Dixie'

Critics were never crazy about this series, but there's a reason it's a fan favorite: It's a glossy, gossipy good time from start to finish.

#31/47:

'BoJack Horseman'

#31/47:

'BoJack Horseman'

You may not think an animated series about a half-horse/half-man would be incredibly clever, but BoJack Horseman absolutely is (and irreverently so).

#32/47:

'Continuum'

#32/47:

'Continuum'

Fans were up in arms that this time-hopping SyFy series was only extended through a fourth season.

#33/47:

#34/47:

'Friday Night Lights'

#34/47:

'Friday Night Lights'

You do not have to love football to love this high-school football drama. I repeat, you do not have to love football to love it. You just will.

#35/47:

'Broadchurch'

#35/47:

'Broadchurch'

The acting in this British drama about the death of an 11-year-old boy is phenomenal, and the series itself manages to be both entertaining and emotionally profound.

#36/47:

'Weeds'

#36/47:

'Weeds'

Jenji Kohan's Weeds didn't get nearly the same social hype as OITNB, but it deserves all the love, too. Mary-Louise Parker makes you love her and hate her at the same time.

#37/47:

'Don't Trust the B— in Apartment 23'

#37/47:

'Don't Trust the B— in Apartment 23'

If you can get past the name (and the B sleeping with her best friend's boyfriend in the first five minutes), Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 will fast become a fave.

#38/47:

'Raising Hope'

#38/47:

'Raising Hope'

Honestly, I'm still not over the fact Raising Hope wasn't renewed for another season. It is heartwarming, hilarious and needs to be picked up by Netflix, stat.

'House of Cards'

#43/47:

'House of Cards'

The Golden Globe- and Primetime Emmy-winning political drama about a devious Washington D.C. politician-turned-president may be ending after Season 6 (which premieres later in 2018), but you can binge Seasons 1-5 in all its darkly melodramatic glory right now.
