In THE CONFESSION, shortly after a man confesses to a crime he didn’t commit—while giving the name of another man as his own to Scotland Yard—he is found floating in the Thames, a murder victim himself.

When he is finally correctly identified, Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge must rethink all that he believed he knew about the case, and suddenly finds three murders on his hands. With no apparent motives for any of the murders, the only clue Rutledge can work from is a tenuous connection with a cloistered English village near the North Sea. 

But the residents of the village will do anything to protect themselves from notoriety.  For notoriety brings the curious, and with curiosity will come change and an unwelcome spotlight on one act of evil that even two centuries later will damn them all.
