No stranger to complex crime scenes, Inspector Ian Rutledge believes there must be something more to the story when he arrives at an accident in the Chelsea neighborhood of London.  A lifeless man thought to have been struck by a car on this quiet street could well have been murdered—but who is the victim?  And where was he killed?  With all the man’s identification missing, Rutledge must follow the only clue he’s got—an expensive watch found in the victim’s vest.

Tracing the origin of the timepiece leads Rutledge to French, French and Traynor, a firm built by two families famous for producing the best Madeira wine in the world.  The current head of the enterprise, Lewis French, is unavailable to interview… because he is missing.  Rutledge first questions the clerk running the London office and then Lewis’ sister who is preparing for the return of Matthew Traynor, a cousin and partner at the firm.  All are suspects, including two women close to the missing French—his current and former fiancées, though they appear to be genuinely shaken by the recent events.

Although Rutledge must make an arrest, he is not satisfied and digs deeper.  He discovers age old sibling rivalries and bitter familial relationships concerning the rightful ownership of the sprawling company vineyards… matters that Rutledge’s superior doesn’t find relevant to the case.  In fact, Rutledge’s boss wants quick answers and embarks on a witch hunt of his own to find the killer.  A detailed Inspector who leaves no stone unturned, Ian Rutledge continues to search for PROOF OF GUILT and finds that he is getting closer and closer to the truth.  However, someone who is seeking revenge is also trying to lure Rutledge closer and closer to his death.
