The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards pleasantly surprised us with the high-quality style on the red carpet. Sadly, not everyone got the message.

Look, we get it: MTV is supposed to be where the young and edgy musicians of today go to be young and edgy. However, some of them just don't know when to quit with the ridiculous outfits.

OK, we expected Nicki Minaj to show up in something completely crazy, but this bright yellow wig and Versace catsuit is just on another level of yuck. You're almost 30, Nicki: Time to put the crazy stuff away.

Former Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr isn't really committing some horrible fashion sins here. However, we can't help but picture her as some crazy fortuneteller with this getup. No, thanks.

We can appreciate what singer Alicia Keys is trying to do with this look: She's doing her best Angelina Jolie Oscars leg impression. Sadly, the Alexandre Vauthier dress is too tight in some places and bunches up in others. You almost had it, Alicia.

Was it just us, or did actress Zoë Saldana look a little out of place the VMAs? The Words actress wore a Salvatore Ferragamo dress that looked more like a ragged wool sweater than awards show wear. Ah, well: She's still gorgeous!
