Former MTV Real World star Joey Kovar was found dead in his Chicago apartment this morning, according to TMZ. He was 29. The former reality star appeared on the 2008 Hollywood installment of the long-running reality series. His cocaine and alcohol addiction was a big storyline on the show until he left to go to rehab.
Kovar's rep told TMZ that one of his friends found him unresponsive with blood coming out of his ears and nose. Family and friends are assuming drugs are to blame.
The 29-year-old reality star's death is a sad reminder that addiction is hard to kick. He reportedly stayed clean for a while after his time on the show, but he eventually started using again. The relapse led him to sign on to VH1's Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky.
Despite his drug use, Kovar was a dedicated personal trainer who maintained a serious weightlifting routine. He even extolled the virtues of a clean diet in an interview with Bodybuilding.com.
"If I have nothing coming up and I'm training really hard I'll go out to dinner with friends and have a big juicy cheeseburger. No fries though, I never eat anything deep fried," he said.
"My [Real World] roommates had the worst diets I have ever seen: fried chicken, chips, cookies; they ate like slobs. I can't believe some of them stayed skinny, it just goes to show you what good genetics can do for ya!"
